Dear Class of 1948,
Thank you very much for your generosity and support over these past three years which has helped provide me with an excellent undergraduate education. I am grateful for the opportunities that I have had at Cornell to prepare myself for a career in chemistry.
I am majoring in chemistry, with a focus in the field of organic chemistry. I am part of a research group doing organic/polymer chemistry research, and I really enjoy my research project. This year I have become very involved in my research, spending most of my time in the laboratory. I currently plan to attend graduate school to study organic chemistry, after which I hope to pursue academic research or a position in industry.
In my free time I enjoy volunteering with the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR), where I assist with outreach programs designed to interest children in science. I have helped teach various science workshops for children, and I have participated in outreach events such as CCMR’s Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) program, designed to interest middle school girls in science. I have had the opportunity to teach a small session on polymer chemistry for 4-H high school students who came to Cornell from the Northeast. I enjoy being able to share my knowledge with enthusiastic students.
Some of my favorite pastimes are drawing and painting, hiking, spending time outdoors, and traveling. I particularly love being at the ocean, as I enjoy the beauty and serenity of the coast, as well as observing the variety of marine life.
Again, I thank you very much for your support.
Sincerely,
Renee Thomas
